Our Mission

Our mission is to celebrate and empower the disability community by bringing people together to have fun and advocate for disability justice, building an inclusive world for all.

Through accessible event planning, advocacy, and community engagement, we create opportunities to celebrate disability pride, foster connections, and advocate for disability justice.

We aim to reframe disability as a source of strength, cultivate a culture of empowerment, and inspire self-advocates to lead the movement toward equity and inclusion in every aspect of life.

Together, we build momentum, power, and a shared vision of a world that works for all of us!

Building Community & Culture

Disability Pride Pittsburgh creates vibrant opportunities to bring people together and challenge societal perceptions by celebrating disability as a powerful and valuable aspect of identity. Through accessible event planning, communication, and advocacy, the organization fosters a culture where individuals with disabilities are celebrated, supported, and encouraged to see their disability as a source of strength.

This video was taken at the 3rd Annual Disability Pride Pittsburgh celebration on August 24, 2024. The event brought together community, music, comedy, poetry, and games at Schenley Plaza in partnership with The Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation.

Empowerment

Disability Pride Pennsylvania inspires individuals with disabilities to lead the movement for equity and inclusion while actively working toward systemic change in every aspect of life. Through collaboration and partnerships, the organization builds collective power and momentum toward a world where everyone, regardless of ability, has equal access, opportunities, and representation.

“Disability culture must arise out of the spontaneous desire of disabled people to share our feelings, experiences and desires, our loves and hates, our pleasures as well as our sufferings, amongst ourselves. In other words, we have to make the choice that we want to identify ourselves as disabled people. We have to be willing to express our separate identity. There can be no disability culture without this freely made choice.” —Vic Finklestein, co-founder of the Disability Arts and Disability Rights Movements
